How to Change Your Microsoft Account Email Address

If your Microsoft email address no longer meets your needs, you can create a new one or add an alias. No need to worry about losing contacts, stored messages, subscriptions, settings or other aspects of your Microsoft account when you create an alias.

Make a Microsoft Email Account

Create a new account to change your Microsoft email. You can export your old Microsoft account’s email messages, contacts, and other data and then import it to your new email address.

  1. Go to login.live.com to sign in with Microsoft.
  2. No Account? Make one!
  3. Input your email address instead of your phone number.
  4. Click Get a New Email.
  5. Enter your email address and choose from outlook.com or hotmail.com.
  6. Next
  7. Then click Next.
  8. Finish the setup by entering your information.

 Create an Alias to Microsoft Account

The easiest way to change your Microsoft email address is to create an alias for your current account. If you prefer, you can use another email address as an alias.

  1. Go to the Add an Alias page and log in with your Microsoft account.
  2. For a new email address, click Create a New Email Address and Add It as an Alias. To use an existing email address, click Add an Email Address as a Microsoft Account Alias.
  3. Click Add Alias and enter the desired email address. You’ll get a message saying you’ve linked the alias to your account.

Using an Alias to log in

You can log in with any alias you create (you can have up to 10 at a time). You can customize your sign-in preferences.

  1. Login to Microsoft Account.
  2. On the next page, click Your Info.
  3. Manage Your Sign-In Method
  4. Click Modify Sign-in Preferences.
  5. Uncheck any aliases you don’t want to use to log in and click Save.

Change Your Primary Alias

You can select an alias as your primary email address.

  1. Login to Microsoft Account.
  2. On the next page, click Your Info.
  3. Manage Your Sign-In Method
  4. Select the alias as your primary email address in Microsoft and click Make Primary.
  5. Confirm with Yes.

Select an Alias for Outlook.com

If you use Outlook.com to read and send emails, you can choose which alias appears in the From line.

  1. Open Outlook.com.
  2. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Select View All Outlook Settings from the settings menu.
  4. In the Settings window, click Sync Email.
  5. In the Set Default From Address list, select the alias.
  6. Click Save and close.
