What You Need to Know About Google Backup Codes and How to Use Them

When you enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Google account, you’ll be prompted to enter a code to complete the sign-in process. This code can be obtained via text message, voice call, the Google Authenticator app, or a physical security key.

At times, you may be without your phone or a security key. In these instances, you can print a list of Google backup codes and store it in a secure location that only you have access to, and then sign in using your backup codes. We demonstrate how to do so on any device.

How to Print or Download Google Backup Codes

After configuring your Google account for two-factor authentication, print or download a set of backup codes.

  1. Sign in to your Google account and navigate to the Security section.
  2. Select 2-Step Verification from the Signing in to Google menu.
  3. Log in and select Next.
  4. In the Backup codes section, scroll down and click Show Codes.
  5. Select Download to save the codes as a text file, or Print to print the codes.

How to Access Your Account Using Backup Codes

When you need to sign in to your Google account using a backup code, locate your list and follow these steps:

  1. Log in to any Google service, such as Gmail, Google Drive, or YouTube.
  2. On the 2-Step Verification screen, scroll down and click Try another method.
  3. Select Enter one of your backup 8-digit codes.
  4. Enter a backup code and then click Next to proceed with the login process.
